Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Tensions remain high in Mothabari, Malda, following recent group clashes. BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar attempted to visit the area on Sunday but was stopped by the police about seven kilometers away in Sadullapur. A massive bamboo barricade was set up to block entry, and Section 163 (formerly Section 144) was imposed in the area. Police sources confirmed that 61 people have been arrested so far, and 19 cases have been registered in connection with the violence. Internet services remain suspended across the affected region.
Sukanta Majumdar, along with BJP workers and supporters, staged a protest on the road after being stopped. He claimed, "I wanted to go alone, which would not have violated any law. Yet, I was not allowed." The BJP leader also alleged that local MLA Sabina Yasmin was given unrestricted access while he was blocked. BJP supporters attempted to break through the first barricade but were stopped at the second, leading to further protests, including the burning of tires on the state highway. District Superintendent of Police Pradeep Kumar Yadav was present at the site as security was tightened.
On March 27, BJP leaders alleged that Hindus were attacked in Mothabari, with Sukanta Majumdar posting a video claiming that 60-70 shops were vandalized, Hindu homes were attacked, and vehicles were damaged. Following this, BJP announced that Sukanta Majumdar would visit the affected families. However, with Section 163 imposed, heavy police deployment and barricades were placed throughout the area. When BJP workers and supporters tried to enter Mothabari, they were stopped, and the Union minister was also blocked.
Clashes erupted when BJP supporters attempted to remove the barricades, resulting in a scuffle with the police. Sukanta Majumdar accused the police of acting under government influence and stated, "We will launch a major protest against this. The announcement will be made today itself." BJP's youth wing also announced plans to guard the area for the next few days. At a press conference, Sukanta Majumdar urged Malda residents to celebrate Ram Navami on a large scale.
The situation in Mothabari remains tense, with continued police presence and restrictions. Sukanta Majumdar also stated, "Wherever Mamata Banerjee goes, she will be greeted with chants of 'Jai Shri Ram.'" BJP leaders continue to blame the ruling party for the violence, while the police maintain that their actions are aimed at maintaining law and order. Investigations into the incidents are ongoing.
